Jorinde Voigt
Meditation Copenhagen I-XII, 2019
The starting point of the series is a sensation; the sore muscles after a workout, a nightmare, the rising and falling of one’s own breath. The etchings visualise the snapshot of a process; captured in movement.
In “Meditation Copenhagen”, Voigt works with an unusually small format and without colour. She focuses on the essence of a print: the direct encounter between etching needle and copper plate. Some of the etched lines seem to reflect the physical resistance of this encounter, other forms appear organic and are reminiscent of freely drawn pencil lines on paper. The title refers to characteristic elements of Voigt’s work: they always show the place of origin and occasionally, as in “Meditation Copenhagen”, include it in the title of the works. The term meditation here can refer to a deep contemplation that characterised the production of the works; but it can also allude to music, a recurring motif in Voigt’s practice.
