New Orleans 2005, 2006

“‘New Orleans 2005’ certainly is about the tragedy of the drowned city of New Orleans (N-O) during Katrina, but the biblical reference (to Noah) strongly suggests that the tragedy doesn’t end there. With the consequences of global warming occurring everywhere, especially the rising sea levels and the increased intensity and frequency of storms, the flood suggested by the text is an everyday event or impending one. Additionally, we in the U.S. have a term for people who are too poor to pay their bills -‘they can’t keep their heads above water.’ OHNOAH signifies that economic issues in addition to ones about climate change are the problem. Any news story will confirm that globally, most of those affected by these kinds of disasters are those at the bottom rungs of the economic ladder. The text of six letters is a micro-universe representing a larger world.” – Kay Rosen
